Commissioner Caban Delivers State of the NYPD Address

Last week Wednesday, New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban delivered his first state of the NYPD address. This comes amid a rise in crime around the city. 

Caban nevertheless touted the progress that the department has made—which includes the use of new technology in solving crimes, as well as increased patrols and good detective work by his department. 

While a number of crime indicators are down this year from last year, murder, felony assault and grand larceny are up this year over this time last year. 

More importantly, crime around the city is still much higher than it was before the pandemic, and citizen organizations assert that the goal needs to be to get crime to where it was before the pandemic, and work to lower it even more. 

These facts notwithstanding, the commissioner said: “The state of the NYPD is strong, the actions of New York’s Finest over the last few weeks alone has been a showcase of incredible bravery, fortitude, and intelligence.”
