NYPD Reports Increases in Most Crimes, Compared to April 2020

The NYPD reported that the overall crime index in New York City rose 30.4% compared with the statistics in April 2020.

Compared to this time last year, shooting incidents showed a 166.1% increase.

Murder is up by 15.8%, rapes, by 52.8%, and robberies increased by 28.6%, compared to April of last year. In addition, grand larceny increased by 66% and felony assaults increased by 35.6%.

Burglaries, which are down 26% compared with last April, were the only crime to show a reduction.

NYPD officers, keeping pace with the increasing number of shooting incidents, have increased by 3.7% the number of gun arrests they made last month.

In April 2021, the NYPD made 223 gun arrests, which is eight more than police officers made in April 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic put a number of long-term criminal investigations on hold, however, as New York City’s court system reopens, the NYPD will work closely with the city’s legal system to prosecute drivers of violence, the NYPD said in a statement.

Other efforts that the NYPD is making to combat gun violence are to deploy targeted patrols who work in coordination both with ShotSpotter technology and field intelligence officers.

“The NYPD is relentless in its mission to maintain public safety for all New Yorkers,” said Police Commissioner Dermot Shea. “The selfless work our officers carry out – day after day, night after night – is one important part of the entire criminal justice system’s process, a process where all pieces must work together to be wholly effective.”
