Revel To Offer E-Bikes, Soon to be Rented on a Monthly Basis

After noticing that New Yorkers were cycling more than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic, CEO Frank Reig said that Revel had the idea to expand into e-bikes.

Revel has a “mission to electrify cities,” by expanding into e-bike rentals, said Reig, who added that the company is also proposing to eventually launch electric car-charging stations.

Not only will the scooter-rental company offer e-bike rentals, the company announced today that in March, Revel will rent battery-powered bicycles for months at a time.

For $99 per month, the company will deliver directly to customers’ doors: bikes, batteries, and chargers. Within the months of e-bike rentals, customer can call in with their maintenance issues to Revel, which promises to send repair people or replacement e-bikes within 24 hours.

“[Monthly e-bike rentals] provide you all the benefits of personal e-bike ownership without the hassle or cost of repairs,” said Anne Emig, Revel’s head of mobility. “It also is great for someone who might be contemplating purchasing an e-bike but just isn’t quite ready to spend the upfront costs.”

Revel’s expansion into e-bikes and e-cars follows last summer’s month-long suspension of the company’s services in New York City after three riders were killed in traffic crashes.

When Revel re-opened in late August 2021, the company added required 20-minute safety tests and mandatory selfies that prove that riders are wearing helmets.

The company, however, also faces multiple lawsuits from Revel riders who say they have suffered injuries due to moped defects. Although Reig insisted that the company’s vehicles are properly maintained for safety, he declined to comment to the Post on the pending lawsuits.

“Every single moped in our fleet has a preventative maintenance schedule: a certain time period, a certain amount of mileage where that vehicle is brought back to the shop and given a complete maintenance overhaul,” Reig told the New York Post.
