Republicans in NY State Assembly Draft Resolution to Impeach Cuomo

Republicans in the New York Assembly have drafted a resolution, which will be introduced before the end of the day, to start impeachment proceedings against Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The move comes after Cuomo on Sunday reportedly told Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers), who called on the governor to resign in a statement yesterday, that lawmakers would have to impeach him if they want him out of office.

After a few weeks in which Gov. Cuomo has continued to deny five different allegations of harassment, this morning at his press conference, Mayor Bill de Blasio said he expected additional allegations would be forthcoming.

“I think there’s more information that’s going to come out that makes it harder and harder,” said the mayor, who called the situation “sad in so many ways."

“People have to believe you to be effective as a leader, and obviously what the Senate Majority Leader said was a powerful statement,” referring to Stewart-Cousins’ statement that “Everyday there is another account that is drawing away from the business of government.”

“I just don’t see how he can govern effectively when fewer and fewer people believe him,” the mayor said.

Democratic Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie must support the resolution for it to be to come to a vote. If passed by the Assembly, the impeachment resolution would then go to the State Senate.
