Gov. Cuomo to Provide State Troopers to Boro Park, Jewish Communities Throughout New York

By Yehudit Garmaise

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that he would be deploying New York state troopers to Boro Park and other Jewish communities to “support the efforts of [local] police officers to ensure safety and security for our residents,” a press release sent out by the governor said.

“Anti-Semitic violence and intimidation is antithetical to the promise and the purpose of New York state, and we will not tolerate it in any form,” the governor said. “We will continue to do everything in our power to help ensure Jewish New Yorkers have the peace, safety, and security they deserve.”

The governor also said that an increased [police] visibility and presence can also be expected on Shabbos, and that state police will also “conduct outreach to Jewish communities to establish communications and address any security concerns,” the governor’s press release said.

Although, of course, the community will welcome the governor’s the “increased patrols at Jewish educational and religious facilities in New York City and other Jewish areas in the state, many in the community are wondering whether the governor and the NYPD were slightly slow in responding to the recent attacks on Jews, although they had previously promised protection, as recently as Friday.

The state police oversee the New York State Hate Crimes Task Force, which includes more than 100 State Police investigators, who have been trained to investigate hate crimes.

Anyone who has experienced bias-motivated threats, harassment, or discrimination, the governor said, should call the state’s toll-free hotline at (888) 392-3644. If you need to report a crime or fear for your safety, please call 911 immediately, the governor said.
