DOT Announces Plan for Secure Bike Parking Network

By Idy Perl

Bikes are the transportation mode of choice for more than 600,000 NYC residents every day. With designated bike lanes and city bikes available for riders, city officials have announced the next step in improving the bike ridership experience- secure bike parking.

NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced that the city will be launching a network of 500 secure bike parking locations beginning next year. To get the initiative started he has put out an open call to find a company that can bring the plans to fruition.

Plans for secure bike parking include more of the self-locking bike racks that are seen around the city, in addition to new enclosed parking models. There will be small-capacity units placed in residential areas near the curb, in addition to high-capacity units located near major transit hubs and popular destinations in the city.

“As more people ride bikes to get around, including heavier and pricier e-bikes, we must create infrastructure for safe, convenient storage, as one of the many highest and best uses for our roadways,” said Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi. “New York must be built for people, at the density our growing city requires. These storage lockers will create many more spaces for New Yorkers commuting needs on our limited roadway.”
