Boro Park Shomrim Demonstrate Heroism and Dedication Through the Night of the Flood

We have all come to know Shomrim through their round-the-clock work in keeping our community safe from crime—heading toward danger and working with law enforcement to stop crime before it happens, and deterring perpetrators from attempting crime within our neighborhoods. This is what they have dedicated themselves to for forty years.

But—as the recent super storm had demonstrated—Shomrim really is here for any emergency situation.

“About ten minutes into the rain, Shomrim began being inundated with calls,” recalls Shomrim’s Yechiel Asia. “Eight dispatchers worked throughout the night, fielding an average of four to five calls per minute!

Shomrim prioritized calls according to the level of urgency. “We had an elderly individual on life support trapped in a basement apartment which was filling up with water, an elderly individual who couldn’t get out of their car on Bay Parkway, and multiple elderly and infirm people trapped in basements; obviously these types of calls were our highest priority,” Mr. Asia relates.

As any community organization understands—it is crucial to learn from past situations in order to better serve the community in the future.

Explains one senior member of Shomrim: We were catching up on calls for flooded areas until six o’clock in the morning, partly due to the volume of calls, but also because we were not equipped for such a storm, with so much flooding. We recognized during this storm how much more we would have been able to help, were we equipped with much more equipment.

While Shomrim’s warehouse is filled with every type of machinery that can be used in rescue and relief situations… they are asking for the community’s help in acquiring more drainage equipment for situations like we have just experienced.

“Nothing will happen if a tree stays down for another ten minutes…A Shomrim member will come with a chain saw to cut it down a few minutes sooner or later. In a flood, every minute matters. The longer the water sits, the more damage there will be, and the more danger the people trapped in the waters are in,” Yechiel explains.

The Boro Park community now has the opportunity to help Shomrim help our community in a very simple and easy manner.
