Mayor de Blasio Wishes “Shana Tova,” Plans for Future Storms

By Yehudit Garmaise

“I want to say to all the members of the Jewish community at this special time of year, ‘Shana Tova,’” Mayor Bill de Blasio said warmly this morning.

In addition to his Yom Tov wishes, the mayor thanked” a group of respected and trusted rabbis from Far Rockaway and the Five Towns who put together a striking video to get the message across about how we need to fight COVID together.”

“My dear beloved chevra,” one rabbi said, “the Ribona Shel Olam has given us a precious gift. It is called the COVID-19 vaccine.”

“What’s the shila?” asked another rav, with a humorous tone.

Although the video was upbeat and positive, a rabbi said seriously, “There is a lot of misinformation  circulating.

“After a year of research and clinical trials, and the actual vaccines being used, we see no evidence of any kind of negative outcomes for fertility nor increased risks to fertility for women of child-bearing ages.”

“It has been a year and a half we have been fighting this battle, and I have seen many appeals to people to protect each other, and this is one of the most powerful and moving,” said the mayor, who called this time of year, “a time for reflection on how we can protect the community, save lives, and help each other.

The mayor, who is reportedly making phone calls to labor leaders and other to gauge possible support as he considers running for governor in 2022, has been consistently voicing the opinion that the extreme weather brought by Hurricane Ida and Hurricane Henri in recent weeks is driven by climate change and that the response needs to be “climate-driven.”

“It is not like the rain we used to know,” said the mayor, who also blamed southwestern droughts and west coast wildfires on global warming. “It is a different reality: with a speed and intensity that we have to understand will be normal. I hate saying that, but it is true."

To compensate the “new hand of cards we have been dealt,” the mayor said, we need "to create a new approach.”

“We are going to, in particular," the mayor said, "focus on a new kind of warning, a more severe kind of warning, and a much more severe set of actions."

Those actions are going to be quite expensive.

“Now we are learning about a whole new kind of challenge that is going to need a massive tens of billions of dollars in infrastructure: maybe hundreds of billions of dollars of infrastructure investment,” said the mayor, who today also launched a 30-task force of experts “to show us a variety of strategies that we can put into place quickly as part of this response.”
