Survey Reveals Only 41% of New York Voters think Cuomo Should be Re-elected

By Yehudit Garmaise

Only 41% of 810 New York voters have said that Gov. Andrew Cuomo deserves re-election in 2022, although voters did not seem sure for whom they would like to vote, according to the Zogby Poll, which is an online survey that was conducted last week.

Although New York Attorney General Letitia James is considered a rising star in New York politics, especially after her recent report that showed that the governor and the Department of Health underreported by 50% COVID deaths among nursing home residents, in an imagined gubernatorial race between the attorney general and Gov. Cuomo, 65% of survey respondents handed the governor an easy victory, Zogby Analytics reported.

In Zogby’s poll, 67% of New Yorkers favored the three-term governor in a hypothetical match-up with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D), who is particularly popular amongst that state’s youngest voters-aged 18-29.

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, (R), was the hypothetical candidate who polled the best against Gov. Cuomo, who received 49% the votes of the Zogby poll’s participants compared to the 37% who supported Stefanik.

While Gov. Cuomo easily beat Stefanik, the governor did show areas of vulnerability with Update New York voters, who favored Stefanik 46% to the 43% who voted for Gov. Cuomo.

When the Zogby Poll asked New York voters to assess Gov. Cuomo's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, 56% respondents thought he was doing a decent job, although interestingly, the split in New Yorkers’ assessment of the governor’s job performance during the pandemic was separated between younger and older voters.

Namely, the majority of younger voters of those aged 18 to 29, rated the governor’s pandemic performance negatively, while 57% of older voters rated the governor’s leadership in the past year positively.
