Federal Management Agency Pulls NYC Schools and MTA Funds

The Federal Management Agency is changing its MTA and school funding rules, which will result in the MTA losing dollars used to sanitize subways, and schools being stripped of their PPE and cleaning supply funds, New York Senator Chuck Schumer announced Thursday.

Without help from the federal government now, the money will need to come from the city or schools themselves.

“An absurd change like this one—that actually takes money away from New York that’s now being used to clean the subways or prepare schools for classes—is a slap in the face to frontline workers, vulnerable seniors, and kids,” Schumer said.

Governor Cuomo said this decision demonstrates Trump’s lack of regard for the safety of essential workers.

"Make no mistake; this is just another attempt by President Trump to hurt New York. We won't be bullied," the governor said.

MTA Chairman Pat Foye said the federal government "seems intent on starving the economic lifeblood of not just New York, but the nation at a time when the MTA is simply trying to keep people safe during the worst pandemic in a century."
