Appeals Court Orders Redrawn House Map for New York

by M.C. Millman

A New York appeals court ordered New York State's congressional map to be redrawn, to the resounding approval of Democrats who now anticipate being allowed further movement to the left.

The appeals court demanded that the Independent Redistricting Commission "commence its duties forthwith." The result in the already Democrat-dominated State Legislature might be that Democrats will have the final say over the appointments for New York's 26 House seats for the next ten years.

After successfully stopping an earlier attempt by Democrats to gerrymander the maps, Republicans have stated they are not giving up in this case either. Instead, they will head to the Court of Appeals for a final decision, given the potentially far-reaching implications of the ruling, which, if it stands, would make re-election nearly impossible for incumbent Republicans like Hudson Valley Congressmen Mike Lawler and Marc Molinaro.

Following the Appeals Court's decision to redraw Congressional maps, Congressman Lawler released the following statement.

"Leading into last year's midterm elections, Hakeem Jeffries and Albany Democrats illegally gerrymandered New York's Congressional maps so badly that their efforts were tossed out by the State's highest court and ruled unconstitutional," said Congressman Lawler.

"Now, they're back for more. After their disastrous showing in last year's midterms, New York Democrats are once again trying to rig the maps for the upcoming elections in 2024," continued Congressman Lawler. "Instead of running better candidates, having a coherent strategy, or messaging on issues New Yorkers actually care about, Albany and Washington DC Democrats would rather gerrymander their way to power. Hakeem Jeffries and Albany Democrats know they can't win on fairly drawn maps, so they're doing everything in their power to rig the system."

"Voters in the Hudson Valley and across New York State won't forget this brazen power grab, and I am confident New York's highest court will toss this obvious attempt by Hakeem Jeffries and Democrats to gerrymander their way back into power," concluded Congressman Lawler.
