Schumer Calls for Federal Involvement in Installing School Bus Cameras

12 Nov 2019 9:27 PM

New York Sen. Charles Schumer is responding to a new state law permitting school buses to install cameras, a system designed to be more effective at catching drivers who ignore the stop signal, by calling on the federal government to step up and offer assistance.

Schumer says the federal government should help shoulder the costs for school districts that can’t afford to install the cameras themselves.

But first, Schumer says, the government needs to complete and release a study it was supposed to conduct on the effect of these cameras on student safety. Some believe the study has been conducted, but the results have yet to be released.

If the study were to reveal a substantial improvement in safety for school buses on the road, the next step would be request federal dollars to help install the camera systems.

In an interview with CBS2, Schumer said: “I am going to first put pressure on NHTSA [National Highway Traffic Safety Administration] – their budget is coming up – to finish their study. If they find that cameras would create a much safer situation there would be federal dollars from the highway safety funding to help pay for them. But we need that study to be done.”
