Week of Rioting Pushes Burglary Rate up 500% in NYC

New York - A week of rampages, riots and mass vandalism on the streets of Manhattan and the Bronx may have cost people their livelihoods and their life’s work, but to the NYPD’s number crunchers it adds up to a grim statistic.

Police officials said Monday that last week saw 909 burglaries, compared to 181 reports over the same period a year ago. The highest number of 911 emergency calls came in on June 1, with more than 2,300 reports of vandalism and destruction. That number went down as the week progressed, dropping to 306 on Tuesday, when the curfew went into effect.

Surprisingly, police said that they were unprepared for the level of looting that accompanied the protests. They said they thought the protests would be peaceful.

“Looting was not a feature we anticipated, or associated with, this type of movement,” said the NYPD’s counterintelligence deputy commissioner, John Miller. “We believe it was an optimistic action by regular criminal groups. Part of their calculus most of police resources would be tied up with marches. We had to split off a good deal of those resources to chase down those looters until the morning.”

As Mayor Bill de Blasio promises to chop off a huge chunk of NYPD funding, murders and shootings continued to rise last week. Conversely, arrests are down more than 40 percent. There has been speculation that police officers are on a slowdown in protest that the city leadership is not backing them.
