Tomorrow: Closures on National Day of Mourning for Jimmy Carter

By Y.M. Lowy

Following the passing of former President Jimmy Carter on December 29, President Joe Biden has declared January 9 a National Day of Mourning, the day of Carter’s funeral in Washington, D.C. This tradition, which dates back to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, is one of the ways the United States pays tribute to its former presidents.

Biden proclaimed that all American flags at public and military sites worldwide to be flown at half-staff for 30 days. Additionally, an executive order issued on December 30 has outlined the closures and observances for this solemn day.

All federal offices, including the United States Postal Service, will be closed on January 9. The mail will not be delivered that day. Federal employees will have the day off, except for those in roles deemed essential for national security or public safety.

Most banks will stay open because the National Day of Mourning is not an official federal holiday. Customers should check with their local branches for specific hours. Most public schools will also remain open.
