The Surprising Impact of Congestion Pricing

By Y.M. Lowy
Since congestion pricing was introduced, more people have been using the subway. For example, on January 8, there were 530,000 more riders compared to the same day last year.
Along with more people riding the subway, crime has also gone down. In January 2025, there were just 147 reported incidents, a 36% drop from 231 crimes in January 2024.
Also, fatal car accidents have decreased. Only 10 fatalities were reported in 2025, down from 18 the year before.
Even though congestion pricing isn’t popular with everyone, the data shows it’s leading to some positive changes.
