Subways have Struck 23 New Yorkers so Far this Year, says the MTA

In the past year, crime in the subways has not been the only way New Yorkers have been hurt on trains, as 23 New Yorkers were hit by subways, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) data.

The NYPD also reported 23 “non-criminal” fatalities on city subway tracks so far this year: from January 1 to May 31, compared to 24 subway deaths, during the first six months of 2020, when far fewer people were riding the rails during the pandemic.

Of the 73 “collisions” between trains and people, the MTA reported so far in 2021, 10 of those subway deaths were, sadly, suicides, and six of those people who were hit by trains after falling between subway cars.

While sometimes people are struck by subways because they not taking safety precautions whether by being on the tracks, or standing too close to the tracks, according to the website of personal injury lawyers Greenberg and Stein, many times subways accidents are the fault of the MTA.

Subway operators who are inexperienced, distracted, or fatigued are cause of subways accidents, according to Greenberg and Stein. Subway drivers who run the trains running at excessive speeds, and poorly maintained subway systems are other reasons that passengers get struck.

“The MTA needs to maintain and repair subway systems within a reasonable amount of time,” says the website of Greenberg and Stein. “Defective subway parts and other issues like significant gaps in doors or wet platforms can lead to severe injuries.

“Subway accidents are frequent enough in New York City that caution should be of the utmost importance to the entities that run the subways and trains.”
