Subway Safety at Risk: Emergency Exits in Disrepair

By Y.M. Lowy
A recent report from the MTA’s Office of the Inspector General has raised serious concerns about the state of emergency exits in New York City’s subway system. Auditors found a troubling mix of hazards, including broken handrails, poor lighting, and exposed wires.
Over 40% of the emergency exits inspected showed significant defects, and many of these issues have gone unaddressed for months. Despite recommendations for improvements, NYC Transit only partially accepted the findings, leaving crucial safety measures in limbo.
While officials claim the system is safe, pointing to a recent evacuation as proof, the report raises concerns about the subway’s emergency exits in a real crisis. With important safety issues still not fixed, the MTA needs to act quickly to ensure the system is truly ready for emergencies.
This topic resurfaced following last week's overnight chaos, when thousands of passengers were stranded underground in the subway system due to a power outage that led to a mass evacuation.
