Subway Chaos in Brooklyn: Thousands Stranded After Power Outage

By Y.M. Lowy
Brooklyn subway service was thrown into chaos on Wednesday evening as a power failure disrupted the A, C, F, and G lines during rush hour, leaving thousands of commuters stranded underground. The outage, which began just before 5:30 p.m., created a harrowing commute for many as trains ground to a halt between stations.
Social media buzzed with photos and videos of passengers navigating dimly lit tunnels, forced to exit stalled trains and walk along the tracks to safety. One commuter described the experience as “a nightmare scenario,” while others expressed frustration with the delays in rescue efforts.
The culprit behind the chaos? Con Edison identified the issue as a feeder cable failure affecting vital lines that serve neighborhoods like Coney Island, Ocean Hill, and Brownsville.
The F line bore the brunt of the disruption, with 3,500 riders stuck on two trains trapped in a tunnel. According to the MTA, evacuations were completed nearly three hours later, around 8:30 p.m.
Service has since been restored, but the incident left many questioning the resilience of the city’s aging infrastructure.
