Stay Afloat During Flood Safety Awareness Week

Governor Kathy Hochul has declared the week of March 9, 2025, as Flood Safety Awareness Week in New York State, aiming to arm residents with the knowledge they need to tackle flood risks and stay safe during emergencies.
The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services works alongside local, state, and federal partners year-round to address flood recovery, train first responders, and educate residents about the ongoing risks of floods.
Flooding is a serious issue, causing billions in damage and nearly 100 deaths each year across the country. The National Weather Service reminds us that flooding can strike at any time in New York, whether from heavy thunderstorms, tropical storms, or even large winter storms. Additionally, rising rivers in winter and spring can break up ice and trigger dangerous ice jam flooding.
For those in flood-prone areas, it’s crucial to document valuables and store important documents in waterproof containers. It’s also wise to create digital, password-protected backups of critical files and photos. When a flood hits, traveling can be deadly—just one foot of moving water is enough to sweep away a vehicle. Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. Stay informed, stay safe, and be prepared.
