State Senator Andrew Gounardes Declares Victory for a Second Term

After being thousands of votes behind his Republican opponent on election night, State Senator Andrew Gounardes has declared victory earlier today following thousands of mail-in ballots that were heavily tilted to the Democratic incumbents favor.
Gounardes, a Democrat, has represented the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn since 2018 in the Née York State Senate, and faced a challenge by Republican Vito Bruno.
Bruno was ahead by roughly 6,000 votes on Election Night, but following the mail-in ballots, Gounardes is now leading by about 2,500 votes with another 1,800 ballots still to be counted, according to a spokesperson.
Democrats have now won 40 seats in the State’s upper chamber, maintaining their majority that they won in 2018. They are now 2 short of claiming a veto-proof supermajority, and with a few races still uncalled, there is a possibility that they may reach that number.
