State DEC Delays Enforcing Plastic Bag Ban to April 1

Although the law banning plastic bags for most stores takes effect March 1st, the State Department of Environmental Conservation says it won’t start enforcing the ban until April 1.

In a court filing on Friday by many Bodega owners who oppose the plastic ban ban, the DEC agreed “to take no enforcement action” until April 1st, State of Politics reported.

In a tweet confirming the delay, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos wrote that it was always the intention of the State to delay enforcement and focus initially on educating New Yorkers about the ban.

“Consistent with what I have been saying for a couple of months — during the initial period of the law, we will be focusing on education, not enforcement,” he said.
