Speed-Limiting Technology to Be Installed on NYC School Buses

If school buses won’t adhere to the speed limit while transporting their most precious cargo, their own buses may slow down on their own, thanks to technology that will soon be installed on many New York City school buses.
“Our primary responsibility as a community and a school system is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our youngest New Yorkers, not only when they are in class but also as they are transitioning to and from their schools,” Schools Chancellor David Banks told Gothamist.com. “The rollout of these safety strategies designed to protect our school bus riders will give our families peace of mind that their babies are safe."
The program will begin with fifty school buses equipped with “intelligent speed assistance,” automatically keeping buses below the speed limit. ISA systems do not automatically apply the brakes but simply limit engine power, preventing the vehicle from accelerating past the current speed limit.
