Although more snow fell last night on New York City than all of last winter, the 6.5 inches of snow that fell on Central Park, according a midnight tweet from the National Weather Service, (NWS) the winter storm did not quite reach the dramatic blizzard that many projected.

Last year’s mild winter, which was a record-breaking year for low snowfall in the city, brought only 4.8 inches in total of snow. In fact, last night was the biggest snowstorm the city has seen since 2016, Mayor Bill de Blasio said this morning.

This morning, the temperature has dropped to the low to mid 20s, but the air is expected to warm up to 30’ by 10 or 11am, and then plummet back down to the high 20s by the afternoon, said Longley, who added that it will feel “pretty brisk out there:” more like the single digits with the wind chill factored in.

The heavy, wet, and plentiful snowflakes of last night are expected to turn to light, wandering flurries that taper off by noon, Accuweather meteorologist Isaac Longley told the New York Post.

The NWS also tweeted that a mix of snow, sleet, and rain will linger throughout this morning, making roads will remain icy, slick, and dangerous until this evening.

Commuters should try to not to drive today, but if they must, they should do so only with extreme caution.

The New York Times, this morning reported a multicar collision in the city that left a half-dozen people hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident occurred on a slippery stretch of road that had been salted by the city and that links Manhattan to the Bronx.
