Shore Parkway Promenade Reconstruction Slated To Begin Soon

By Idy Perl

A new $8 million project is slated to begin soon that will completely overhaul a section of the Shore Parkway Promenade, between the Verrazzano Bridge and Ceasar’s Bay.

The project was announced by Council Member Justin Brannan, who represents Bay Ridge, Coney Island, Sea Gate, parts of Dyker Heights, Bath Beach, and Gravesend. He was able to secure over $8 million in funding, which will go toward the reconstruction of the crumbling promenade.

Years of erosion have affected both the structural and aesthetic components of the promenade, and it is in desperate need of a makeover to address safety issues. The redesign will bring newer and bigger bike and pedestrian lanes with plenty of greenery to divide them, and will install new seating, bike racks, game tables, fountains and other amenities in areas with an overpass. The design phase is almost complete, and construction is expected to begin in the fall.

“I’ve spent my whole time in government representing communities along the southern Brooklyn waterfront,” Brannan said in a statement. “It’s a dream come true to fight through longstanding obstacles and secure funding to ensure our promenade is as safe, accessible, and beautiful as possible.”
