SCAM ALERT: Social Security Fraud Targeting Boro Parkers

Last night, a number of Boro Park residents were targeted with scam phone calls related to their Social Security numbers.

This is a ploy that scammers are employing with increasing frequency, and even the most alert may sometimes fall prey to it.

The fraudsters will use any number of ingenious methods to get you to divulge your social security number—and from there the damage that can be done is incalculable.

BP24 reminds you that the social security administration will NEVER call you—or email you—except in some instances when they have already been in contact with you regarding an open matter (they will always initiate matters by regular mail). Never speak with anyone on the phone who purports to be from the Social Security administration. And never give your social security number to anyone over the phone under any circumstances.

If someone calls you, ostensibly from the SSA, hang up immediately—even if they threaten you with fines or arrest. Neither should you return any calls, or reply to emails, from such a scam.

Always pause and think twice about any unsolicited calls of this sort.
