Satmar Rebbe Crowns Upstate Torah Dedication, Grand Opening Event at Brand-New Hamaspik Resort

Rock Hill, New York — A former Ramada Inn in this Catskills town hosted an historic celebration Monday, as Satmar Rebbe Rabbi Aharon Teitelbaum, shlita, completed the inking of a new Torah scroll.

As a band played, hundreds of Hamaspik staffers from across New York, dozens of youth with special needs, and Kiryas Joel community leaders, first watched, then marched with the Torah around the building, finally dancing for some time in the ballroom. The dancing was followed by a formal meal marked by guest speakers, including the Rebbe himself.

The new Torah was dedicated l’ilui nishmas Rabbi Chuneh Kolchitzer, h.y.d.  “Reb Chuneh,” as he was known, was a Chasidic scion who perished—along with wife, children and grandchildren—in the Holocaust in 1943, leaving no survivors.  The new Torah is reportedly the first l’ilui nishmas Reb Chuneh and his whole family of kedoshim.

Mr. Yisroel Wertheimer, late father of Hamaspik founder Mr. Meyer Wertheimer, had been Reb Chuneh’s talmid as a European bochur.  The new Torah thus also honors the elder Wertheimer’s holy mentor.

The Torah scroll also cemented the establishment of the Hamaspik Resort—a 75-bedroom private retreat center that in months and years ahead will host the agency’s multiple yearly community events and a special-needs camp this summer.

Complete with an onsite beis medrash (also named for Reb Chuneh), a planned mikvah, and full amenities, the Hamaspik Resorts boasts unprecedented comfort and convenience.
