Revenge is Sweet: Cuomo May Impose 14-day Quarantine on Florida Visitors

New York - Now it’s New York’s turn to penalize Florida for the rising Covid deaths.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that he may require anyone who was in Florida to quarantine for 14 days as the coronavirus deaths rise in the Sunshine State and decline in the Empire State.

It would be a moment of sweet revenge for Cuomo, who complained vociferously in April when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis imposed a quarantine on travelers from New York state.

“I have experts who have advised me to do that,” Cuomo said at his daily coronavirus press briefing. “I’m considering it now.”

New York has not had more than a few hundred new cases and fewer than two dozen deaths a day for the past couple of days. Florida, on the other hand, has seen a major spike in coronavirus cases, with about 2,600 new cases on Wednesday.

“Florida and other states imposed a quarantine on New Yorkers,” Cuomo said. “If you went to Florida you had to quarantine for two weeks because they were afraid of New Yorkers bringing the virus. Fast forward 100 days — now we’re afraid they’re bringing the virus to our state.”

At the time, DeSantis, a Republican, ordered checkpoints at airports and along interstate roads to block any New Yorkers from entering. He said it was “not fair to the people of Florida” to “airdrop” people from states with elevated Covid rates.
