Residents Urgently Ask Governor To Clean Canal

By Idy Perl
Residents of Gowanus are asking Governor Hochul to clean up the Gowanus Canal, right outside Boro Park.
As per a report on News12, Residents are complaining about smells coming from the canal and are concerned that they are constantly breathing in toxins. New construction projects near the canal has made the smells stronger as construction workers dig next to the water.
Although the canal has been undergoing dredging to clean the water, as reported here on BoroPark24, the project is six years behind schedule, which caused the cost of the project to balloon since the water will likely need another dredging by the time the first one will be completed.
In March 2023, we reported that Mayor Eric Adams said while breaking ground on a new $1.6 billion project, that he not only wants to beautify Gowanus Canal but to make the water so clean that dolphins want to swim in the water that runs so close to Boro Park.
