Red Light, Green Light, Queue Jump Lights?

Red Light, Green Light, Queue Jump Lights?

By Idy Perl

A new kind of traffic light is coming to New York City intersections soon that will change how traffic has been working for years.

A queue jump light, which is a white horizonal stripe under the regular green light, will give MTA city buses a head start at intersections and allow them to start driving before other vehicles on the road. This will ensure that city buses move around the city faster and run on schedule.

According to an announcement by the NYC Department of Transportation, the queue jump lights will gradually be added to 25 intersections in NYC each year. As can be expected, no one is very happy about it. New Yorkers are arguing the legality and the safety of those lights, but the plan will nonetheless be going forward.
