Red Hook’s Waterfront Redevelopment

Red Hook’s Waterfront Redevelopment

By Y.M. Lowy

Red Hook’s waterfront is now at the center of an important discussion.

Last spring, Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul announced plans to transfer the Brooklyn Marine Terminal to the New York City Economic Development Corporation. Their goal was to create a “harbor of the future” to reduce truck traffic and support a sustainable industry, which excited many people.

However, concerns quickly arose when the NYCEDC proposed building 7,000 to 9,000 market-rate housing units to cover the costs of upgrading the terminal.

This change alarmed community leaders, who are frustrated by how fast the plans are moving, being pushed through in just six months. Many residents feel that the terminal is a crucial part of their neighborhood and do not want it to become real estate.

Although the proposal is still in the planning stage, it has sparked discussions about Red Hook’s future. Jennifer Sun from the NYCEDC says there will be chances for public input and highlights that meeting housing needs is a priority for the city.
