Rat-Proof NYC Bins Are Maybe Not Rat-Proof After All

Rat-Proof NYC Bins Are Maybe Not Rat-Proof After All

By Idy Perl

Well, the city’s rat-proof NYC Bin garbage cans that Mayor Adams has been marketing as part of his Trash Revolution may not be rat-proof after all.

A garbage can in Williamsburg has caught the attention of city residents and officials after a rat-sized hole was found in the dense plastic. Weirdly enough, the NYC Bin’s warranty doesn’t cover damage from wildlife.

Some city officials have reluctantly agreed that the hole seems to have been made by a rodent but argued that rat sightings are down around the city and overall the bins are doing their jobs.

“Exposed black trash bags litter our streets and turn our sidewalks into all-you-can-eat rat buffets, which is why Mayor Adams is leaving them in the past,” Liz Garcia, deputy press secretary for Adams, said. “Trash bins are our city’s future, and we’re already seeing the positive impacts of our new bin rules. Rat sightings continue to plummet since we started our residential bin transition in November, proving that bins are a smart and much more rat-proof alternative.
