Proposal to Cap Speeding Ticket Surcharges in N.Y. Introduced

by Mindy Cohn
A new proposal to limit the amount of surcharges and fees that can be added to a speeding ticket was introduced by Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara this week.
A speeding ticket can range from $45 for driving 10 miles over the speed limit to $600 when going over 30 miles an hour above the speed limit.
If the proposal is approved, fees will be capped at 10% of the initial fine. Santabarbara crafted the proposal in response to complaints about increased surcharges over the last several years, resulting in large fines for even a relatively minor speeding infraction, as some tickets can have hundreds of dollars in additional penalties and fees added to the original speeding ticket.
