Poll Reveals: New Yorkers Prefer Rudy Giuliani to Bill de Blasio, but Not By Much

Siena College, which is in Loudonville, a three-hour drive from New York City, took a poll that reveals a lack of enthusiasm for both Mayor Bill de Blasio and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

In the poll, only 28% of registered voters in New York gave Mayor Bill de Blasio a favorable rating, while 32% of New Yorkers said that they still thought well of Giuliani.

Siena’s survey also asked New Yorkers which politicians were viewed unfavorably.

Slightly more New Yorkers, 56%, showed distaste for Giuliani than for Mayor de Blasio, about whom 53% said they disapproved.

Although Giuliani was widely admired from during his time as New York City’s mayor for his accomplishments of cleaning up the city, being tough on crime, and for his strong leadership on and after 9/11 in 2001, over time Giuliani has lost some favor.

Early in 2021, Giuliani became a key player in President Trump's impeachment inquiry, found himself under federal investigation, and has represented the Trump campaign's unsubstantiated efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

A local politician once explained to BoroPark 24 that the condition that has created New Yorkers’ impatience and distaste for Mayor de Blasio is called “eighth-year-itis.”

After two terms, many New Yorkers feel that the mayor’s policies have increased the city’s crime and lowered other quality-of-life issues, such as allowing homelessness and the city to sink further into debt.

In fact, in the poll that asked respondents between Jan. 10 and 13 whether they favored the city’s mayor, the state’s governor, and the incoming and outgoing presidential administrations, Mayor de Blasio fared the absolute worst, with the lowest number of people expressing their approval for the job he is doing as the city’s leader.

In contrast to the current and former mayors’ low approval ratings, Siena’s poll showed that 57% of New Yorkers view Gov. Andrew Cuomo favorably, while 56% if New Yorkers regard Vice President Kamala Harris favorably.

The politician who rated the highest, receiving a 62% approval rating was President-elect Joe Biden, who will be inaugurated tomorrow.

Vice President Mike Pence had a 42% approval rating, and 30% of respondents approved favorably to President Donald Trump, whose last day in office is today.
