Poll Results: Would You Ride the Train Amid Recent Safety Concerns?

By Y.M. Lowy

As concerns about subway safety continue to rise, BoroPark24 conducted a poll across our website and Twitter account to see the public’s view regarding the safety of New York City’s public transportation system. Combined results show that 81% voted they would not ride the train and 19% of responses show they would. The results reflect a growing divide in how commuters feel about using the subway amid numerous reports of violent incidents and crime in the transit system.

Website Poll Results

On BoroPark24’s website, 88% of respondents stated they would not ride the train, while only 11% said they would. Many shared their concerns in the comment section, citing safety as the primary reason for their reluctance.

One commenter noted, “I have transportation to and from work, but when I need to leave early, I’d rather take an Uber than the subway.” Others echoed this sentiment, with one person stating, “Governor Hochul has to revamp the whole transportation system for it to be safe again.” A significant number of respondents expressed that they would only take the subway in urgent situations and avoid it when possible, especially if traveling alone or at night.

“I need to use the subway often, but in the last three years, I feel it is unsafe. If I do need to go, I don’t go alone,” shared one user. Another remarked, “I used to ride the train frequently, but now, since the Black Lives Matter movement, never again until it’s safe and improved.” Other responses pointed to a significant increase in crime post-COVID, with some preferring to pay more for car services instead of using the train.

Twitter Poll Results

The poll on BoroPark24’s Twitter account showed a more mixed response. While 74% of voters said they would ride the train, 26% still expressed hesitation, reflecting some of the same safety concerns shared on our website.

“I was actually on the F train yesterday, and it felt perfectly safe,” said one Twitter user, adding, “But no, I did not see any of Governor Hochul’s National Guards anywhere.” A few users mentioned they would use the subway but only with precautions, such as avoiding people wearing masks and not flashing expensive jewelry. Others highlighted the difficulty of finding alternative transportation: “It’s the only way I can get to school. I would love to find another way.”

The responses highlight the growing concerns over subway safety, with many calling for immediate action from local officials. While some riders continue to use the train despite feeling uneasy, a significant number of New Yorkers prefer to avoid it altogether unless absolutely necessary.

As Governor Hochul and other city leaders claim they are addressing these issues, whether through increased police presence, improved infrastructure, or enhanced safety measures, the future of New York’s subway system may depend on how well these concerns are addressed.
