NYPD Report on Overall Crime Drop

The New York Police Department reported an overall crime drop over the same time last year, including a drop in shootings and most major crimes.
Murders, robberies, and burglaries are all down, according to NYPD data for the year through July that was released last week.
The City saw a 26.5% decline in shootings this year, 811, as compared to 596 for the same period a year ago.
There was an 8% drop in hate crimes, from 53 to 49. Major crime in the subways decreased by 9.9% over last year, going from 191 to 172. Murders were down 11.2% since last year, going from 267 to 237. Robberies were down by 6.3%, going from 9,932 to 9,305. Burglaries dropped by 10.7%, going from 8,995 to 8,029; grand larcenies dropped by 2.6%, from 29,307 to 28,558.
The NYPD also reported 4,631 arrests in the major crime categories, reflecting a 15.3% increase in arrests over last year. Thirty thousand six hundred twenty-nine major crime arrests were made since January, which marks the most for any similar seven-month period since 1999.
On the other hand, both felony assaults and grand larcenies auto increased over the same period. Grand larcenies auto skyrocketed by 18.5%, going from 1,260 to 1,493. Felony assaults increased 0.4%, from 2,631 to 2,641, compared to July last year.
