NYPD Not Planning to Increase Shifts to 12 Hours to Prepare for Chauvin Verdict

By Yehudit Garmaise

NYPD officers will not work 12-hour shifts, as had been reported, tweeted NYPD Chief Rodney Harrison, instead of their usual 8-hour and 35-minute shifts, to prepare to the verdict of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

Chauvin, whose defense began presenting witnesses in Minneapolis on Monday, faces second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges in the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020.

After lawyers complete making their closing arguments, which Judge Peter A. Cahill said could begin on Monday, April 19, the jury will sequester and will take as long as it needs to deliver a verdict.

Rumors were circulating that the NYPD would take on 12-hour tours after police officers were forced to do so last summer in what the department described as “war time response” to the violent protests and looting that took place after Floyd was first killed.

“It’s obviously a dire response to the ongoing civil unrest,” a police source told the New York Post last summer in a week in which 700 people were arrested, 12 patrol cars were vandalized, and seven officers were injured.  “The fact that the NYPD would mandate such a drastic measure in light of the economic state of the city is austere indeed.

In the background of Chauvin’s verdict, which is bound to enflame tensions and wounds, was last Sunday’s killing of Duante Wright, who was killed during a routine traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minn., when police officer Kim Potter shot Wright with a gun, instead of what she thought was a taser.
