NYPD launches Online Portal to Report Minor Crimes

911 calls may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to the NYPD’s new reporting service at NYPDonline.org.

Now, instead of having to make phone calls, wait on hold, and speak to people to receive simple and basic services from the NYPD, New Yorkers can now report low-level crimes by logging onto their computers or phones.

“We looked for ways we could digitize [typical complaints,] so we can give people access to those services without them walking into precincts, waiting in line and [or having to speak on their phones],” NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Information Technology Matthew Fraser told nydailynews.com.

The NYPD chose the four categories of describing lost objects, pointing out graffifi, or reporting petty larceny and misdemeanors to simplify the interactions “the average person had with the department,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Strategic Initiatives Danielle Pemberton said Wednesday.

Since 2010, these four categories have comprised 23% of all reports filed with the NYPD.

Crimes that are felonies, such as assault, robbery, and grand larceny still must be filed in person with the police, although the NYPD said that it plans eventually to add more categories of complaints that New Yorkers can file digitally.

After filing complaints online, New Yorkers will receive emails that confirm that the NYPD received the reports. Once the NYPD processes the complaints, officers will send out emails that are labeled with complaint numbers. If more information is needed, police officers will place follow-up calls for further investigation of the crimes reported.

“This is another step forward into modern, 21st century policing,” said NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea, who officials say has been working on the NYPD’s online portal since he was first appointed on Dec 1, 2019. “[The online portal] will make police services more easily accessible,” added Shea, who mentioned other online services the NYPD provides, such as  disciplinary information on police offers, dashboards about hate crimes, departmental demographics, and use of force complaints.
