NYPD Issues New "Disciplinary Matrix" for Officers Who Break Department Rules
The NYPD issued today a new "Disciplinary Matrix" for officers who break department rules.

The listing of punishments and reprimands that officers will receive if they violate department policy and/or the law comes after years of civilian and government review of inadequate Department enforcement. Civilian Complaint Review Board (the City agency responsible for taking complaints against NYPD officers accused of wrongdoing by the public) chair Fred Davie said that "Harsher penalties will apply in ways we had not previously applied them to police officers -" an illusion to fact that he intends to use his Commission's authority to an extent not previously used.

However, despite the new, more transparent guidelines, many are dubious that they will be implemented in a proper manner. Brooklyn Defender Services which represents clients who are otherwise unable to afford an attorney to represent them put out a statement saying that "We know, and this reform shows, that the NYPD will never police itself. New York needs truly binding measures of police accountability, not toothless matrices with loopholes that allow the NYPD to excuse abusive conduct.
