NYPD Hate Crime Task Force Investigates Knife Attack on Belgian Jewish Family
By Yehudit Garmaise
The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the knife attack of a 23-year old Belgian Yid, his wife, and his 1-year-old daughter, which took place on Wednesday evening in Battery Park in Manhattan, to determine whether the attack was a hate crime.
The family told police that their attacker, who has been identified as Darryl Jones, did not say anything anti-Semitic during the attack, although he was “ranting” as if he were mentally unstable.
Jones, who is 30, was released from jail last month after spending several years behind bars after he pled guilty to attempting murder during a violent robbery on the Upper East Side in August 2011.
The New York Post reported that Jones, who lives in NYCHA’s Grant Houses, was arrested and charged with three counts of assault, assault on a person less than 7 years old, three counts of criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
On Thursday, when a reporter asked Mayor Bill de Blasio what the city is doing to address the fact that many of the recent attacks on Asian Americans have been perpetrated by people who are mentally ill, homeless, and “frequently involved with the criminal justice system,” the mayor responded that “the Asian Hate Crimes Task Force is using undercover officers and decoy officers.
The mayor also laid some of the blame on Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
“Now, maybe that the imperial governorship is being challenged that we're going to see a different discussion on this topic,” the mayor said. “The parole system in New York State does not work: takes people coming out of prison, including folks who have committed violent crimes, dumps them in New York City with no plan, no housing, no job, no mental health support.
“It's time to hold the State of New York, responsible for their parolees and for actually providing the services that will give us a chance of avoiding these horrible situations.”
