NYC Subway Cars Fully Monitored

By Y.M. Lowy

Every subway car in New York City is now under surveillance, marking a major milestone in the city’s fight against crime. On Wednesday, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the installation of cameras across all subway cars is officially complete.

“We have 100% of subway cars now equipped with cameras,” Hochul said. “If you’re thinking of committing a crime on the subway, we’re watching—and you will be caught.”

This move is already making waves. NYPD Chief of Transit Joseph Gulotta said the cameras have been a game-changer for law enforcement. “Now, when a crime occurs, we’re getting images from inside the train car almost instantly. It’s helping us identify suspects faster than ever before,” he said.

“It’s not about reacting to one specific crime,” Hochul explained. “This is part of a proven strategy to protect New Yorkers and keep crime down.”

And the numbers back her up: since March, subway crime has dropped by 10%, thanks to this multi-faceted approach. The subway system hasn’t seen crime rates this low since the 1970s.
