NYC Sanitation Announces More Garbage Bin Programs

By Y.M. Lowy
NYC Sanitation is launching a pilot program to improve waste collection in high-density neighborhoods, starting in West Harlem. This program introduces the Empire Bin for larger buildings with 31 or more residential units, which will be required to use these locked bins for trash collection.
Smaller buildings that are up to 9 units must now use bins with secure lids, 55 gallons or less. Official NYC bins are available for purchase online or at Home Depot locations. Buildings with 10-30 units can choose between Empire Bins or individual bins.
Current 55-gallon bins can be used until June 2026. Afterward, only official NYC Bins will be allowed. This initiative aims to improve cleanliness and efficiency in NYC’s waste management system.
