NYC's New Police Commissioner Makes Changes in NYPD Leadership

NYC's New Police Commissioner Makes Changes in NYPD Leadership

by Mindy Cohn

New York City Police Commissioner Caban, who was appointed to office on July 17 as reported by BoroPark24 here, is working on a new leadership team.

Changes include Caban's request last week to James Essig, who has been the NYPD Chief of Detectives since March 2021, to submit his resignation.

On Friday, Caban requested a meeting with other top officials, including Chief of Transportation Kim Royster, Assistant Chief of Detectives Christopher McCormack, and Assistant Commissioner Gene Whyte. During the meeting, they, too, were asked to resign from leadership positions.

Commissioner Caban sent a message on Friday to department members claiming he is placing the right people into the right spots to do the right job for the people of New York City.

"I ask you to embrace these changes as we step into a future that is as bright as it is promising," the Commissioner wrote. "I ask you to join me as we salute our departing colleagues as they exit our privileged arena of public service with their heads held high. And I ask you to welcome the leadership team taking shape before us and to be fully confident in knowing we will all be better for the creative, dynamic, and forward-looking individuals at the top."
