NYC Mayor Wishes New Yorkers “Shana Tova,” Emphasized Everyone Ready for a New Year

Before briefly greeting Jewish New Yorkers this morning in his daily press conference, de Blasio alluded to the many challenges that Covid-19 and civic unrest brought to the city and the country this year.
“We are in country right now that is going through a lot,” de Blasio said. “We are in a city that is going through a lot. We are in a democracy that is struggling, and everyone can see it.”
But after briefing the New York City press on many of challenges facing the New York City public school system as it tries to restart the new year, de Blasio said something unexpected.
“It is important that I now say something in another language because this is New York City, and we are the most diverse and wonderful place in the world, we celebrate each other, and we respect each other,” said de Blasio, who gives a portion of his press conference every day in Spanish.
“Now I will turn to [yet] another language, and say Shana Tova and wish a very, very happy new year to all Jewish New Yorkers and [tell you that] all of us look forward to this new year,” de Blasio said.
“In fact, we all,” de Blasio emphasized with a laugh, “want a new year, no matter what religion we celebrate, so we will all be very happy to have it” so, ‘Shana Tova’ to all.”
