NYC Lifts Ban on Fireworks Amid Ongoing Drought Warning

By Y.M. Lowy

Good news for New Yorkers: the city has lifted its ban on open flames and fireworks after recent rainfall reduced fire risks.

Starting December 9, 2024, grilling in parks is back and permit holders for fireworks can update their permits.

While the rain has helped, it is far from enough to replenish the city’s upstate reservoirs. NYC remains under a drought warning, and Mayor Eric Adams is urging everyone to use water wisely.

New Yorkers should continue to minimize water usage whenever possible, and Mayor Adams reminded New Yorkers of ways they can conserve water. Conserving water does not have to be hard. Start by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth- it saves two or three gallons per minute. If you spot a leaky faucet, fix it! Even a small drip can waste over 3,000 gallons a year. Take short showers, and when filling the bathtub, only go halfway! Every drop counts.
