NYC DOT Launching Speed Cameras At Highway Work Zones

Workers on highway construction zones are constantly at risk of being injured by speeding cars or vehicles entering prohibited areas in a work zone. Since 2009, 51 NYC DOT workers have been injured and 5 have died from work zone accidents. To reduce these accidents and encourage drivers to keep to the speed limit, NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced that speed camera enforcement will be launched at several highway work zones.
In a partnership between the NYC DOT and the NY State DOT, several speed cameras have already been deployed at various highway worksites and have caught 210 speeding vehicles. First offenders caught on the cameras will get a $50 fine, which will increase to $75 for a second offense, and go up to $100 for all subsequent offenses within an 18-month period.
“Speeding ruins lives, and if you speed in a work zone, you will get caught,” NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said. “My message to drivers in work zones is simple: behave as if crews in work zones are members of your own family. Our crews do important work to keep you safe, and we need you to do your part to help keep them safe.”
