NYC Cracks Down on Sidewalk Scaffolding

By Y.M. Lowy
Mayor Eric Adams just signed a set of new laws that will restore light on our sidewalks. The new laws now require property owners to finish construction faster and remove scaffolding that used to sit untouched for years. Over 300 old sheds have already been taken down under Adams’ Get Sheds Down plan.
The new rules shorten shed permits from one year to just three months. Property owners will be required to update the city regularly and can face penalties if repairs drag on.
Some buildings may now be allowed to use safety netting instead of full sheds. The city is also developing more affordable shed designs.
