NY AG Letitia James Issues Alert For Jewish Consumers Before Pesach

By Idy Perl

NY Attorney General Letitia James issued a consumer alert today for Jewish New Yorkers to look out for potential discriminatory pricing practices as we get closer to Pesach.

In past years car washes in Jewish neighborhoods in NYC and the Hudson Valley have been known to raise the prices for Jewish customers looking to clean their vehicles before Pesach, which is an illegal practice as it discriminates against the customer on the basis of religion.

“Taking advantage of someone’s religious observances and practices is offensive and unacceptable,” Attorney General James said. “As Passover approaches, I urge Jewish New Yorkers who feel that they may have been a victim of discriminatory price gouging to contact my office. My office has zero tolerance for any discrimination and anyone who engages in practices to unfairly raise prices on the Jewish community as they prepare for Passover will be held accountable. No New Yorker should be taken advantage of during a holiday season and forced to pay more for a service because of their religion.”
