Number of shootings in NYC skyrocket over the past nine days

Over a nine-day period ending Saturday there have been 83 shootings in New York. 112 people were killed or wounded across the city. The NYPD reported Sunday that they have responded to at least 34 shootings since Friday alone.

New York City shootings during this time compared to the same period of time last year have statistically risen by more than 127%.

The NYPD attributes the dramatic rise in violence to courts being closed during the COVID-19 pandemic also forcing some of Rikers Island inmates to be released.

Mayor Bill de Blasio also attributed the chaos to the lack of a fully functioning court system and the fact that people are upset and anxious after being locked up and striped of their livelihoods due to the pandemic.

All this comes after debate over slashing $1 billion from the NYPD’s budget because of protests to defund the police. With details on the city's budget decisions due Tuesday, protestors continue to stage their round-the-clock sit-in outside city hall, active since last week.
