New York’s COVID-19 Positivity and Hospitalization Rates Decline, Vaccination Program Ramps Up

New York’s coronavirus positivity rate plunged to 2.79%, which is its lowest level in a month, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Shabbos.

On Friday, the seven-day average of the state was 3.31%, which was slightly less than the previous day and the lowest since Dec. 2.  New York City’s COVID positivity rate also dropped to 3.69% from 3.88%, the day before.

Hospitalizations from COVID-19 across the state also fell on Friday to 4,241, which is the lowest the rate has been since Dec. 3, when the winter holiday surge was just beginning after the increased travel that started with Thanksgiving at the end of November 2020.

As of Friday, Gov. Cuomo reported that 23.1% of New Yorkers are fully vaccinated, and the state’s vaccination program continues to ramp up. From Friday afternoon to Shabbos afternoon, for instance, the state administered 282,305 doses.

On Thursday, New York City set a record for providing the most shots in one day the city when it vaccinated 104,600 New Yorkers,

Although the city had given more than 100,000 vaccinations in one day once before, on Thursday, the city broke its record “by substantially more,” Mayor Bill de Blasio told Brian Lehrer on Friday.

“So, this is the shape of things to come,” the mayor said. “I think you're going to see in the weeks ahead, a half million a week: even more, 600,000 a week or more, as we get more and more supply. And the demand has been really amazing, especially now that everyone is eligible. “
