New York Officials Finally Certify 2020 Election Results, Electoral College to Soon Vote

By Yehudit Garmaise

New York City officials today, finally, certified the city’s 2020 election results, which showed that 5,230,985, or 60.9% of New Yorkers voted for Joe Biden, while 3,244,798, or 37.8%, of New Yorkers, voted for President Donald Trump.

The completion of the counting of the city’s 3 million votes expanded Joe Biden’s margin of victory to four points higher than what was originally reported on Election Day, which revealed only unofficial results.

State officials today finalized what the city’s Board of Elections (BOE) officially announced yesterday after counting in-person, early voting, and mail-in ballots throughout the three weeks since the Nov. 3 election.

The BOE’s counting took longer than usual because the pandemic influenced 18% more New York City voters to cast absentee ballots, which take longer to count, compared with the city’s voters in the 2016 election.

On Dec. 14, the members from each state of the Electoral College are scheduled to meet and cast their official ballots for president and vice president. All of the electors’ ballots must be received by Dec. 23, and on Jan. 6, Congress will officially count the electoral votes to finalize the process of whom will be inaugurated as President of the United States on Jan. 20, 2021
